2015 – LEXUS IS ORIGAMI

Craft work is one of the most prominent elements in premium brands, and the Lexus UK department has found a different way of highlighting this meticulous process that is implemented in every manufactured car. To honor the artisans, known as ‘takumis’, who participate in the production of their luxurious models, Lexus created a copy of the full-scale IS model, manufactured using 1700 recyclable cardboard panels, each 10 mm thick and cut made to laser. And to make sure the sequence was correct, Lexus had to provide a reference number for each sheet before manually putting them all together. For this, a water-based wood glue was used, left for ten minutes after each application. It is a work that also honors the Origami, an artistic expression born in Japan, which is a traditional and secular Japanese game of folding paper, creating representations of certain beings or objects with the geometric folds of a piece of paper, without cutting or paste it. After scanning the car in 3D, Toyota’s premium brand utilized a set of machines to accurately cut the various pieces of cardboard, then attached to a high strength steel and aluminum frame for an impressive end result. It is actually a car that can be driven normally, because the ‘origami car’ uses an electric motor – of unspecified power.

2015 – LEXUS LF-FC CONCEPT

Lexus’s big innovation for the Tokyo Motor Show was the LF-FC Concept, a proposal that shows the way the brand intends to follow in the fields of design and technology. Toyota Design Brand Director, TokuoFukuichi, defines the model as “more than a car, and must go beyond conventional imagination. LF-FC expresses our progressive luxury and high-tech vision of a world not far apart. ” The design of the four-seater sports coupe shows the evolution of the L-Finesse style, showing new forms for the front grille, whose ends combine with the contours of daylight also in the shape of an “L”, while in the rear the lanterns win Floating lines similar to front lighting. Lexus says it is when you see the LF-FC in profile that you can see its full character, with the usual roof angles of the coupes, “demonstrating that it is not a car made just for the big straight lines, but also for winding roads “. The 21-inch wheels seek to add even more charm and dynamism to this concept of style. The interior features an evolved man-machine interface where operations are performed through gesture commands, without touching any panel or button. The use is facilitated by information provided on a holographic screen in the center panel, which indicates whether the order was understood by the system. Lexus said the LF-FC Concept will be powered by hydrogen and electricity. A fuel cell placed in the rear sends its power to the rear wheels, while two electric motors connected to the front wheels guarantee the integral traction. The Japanese brand also said that the concept revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show will demonstrate Lexus’ diverse autonomous driving capabilities.

2015 – LEXUS NX

Lexus officially unveiled the NX 2015 crossover at the Beijing Motor Show in April. The model is the production version derived from the LF-NX concept vehicle launched last year at the Frankfurt and Tokyo Motor Show. The final version of the car looks more refined and evolved compared to the concept, but still manages to be less conservative than the competitors in the segment. The model will hit the US market later this year.  At the front the model sports a large grille, flanked by slender headlights and strips of LED daytime running lights. It received 17-inch alloy wheels in the standard model, and large 18-inch wheels in the SPORT F derivative. At the rear there are L-shaped lamps equipped with LED technology along with two chrome exhaust outlets. There is also a sloped roof and a full angular design similar to other recent Lexus brand models. Inside they used a combination of soft materials and hard metal surfaces. Equipped with a seven-inch multimedia screen with GPS, the highlight goes to the system that does wireless recharge for electronics. The crossover features adaptive speed control, blind spot detector, head up display system and leather-lined seats. There is also an information display built into a G force sensor. The engine will feature a naturally aspirated engine in the standard NX 200, followed by a new 2.0 turbo in the NX 200t and a hybrid variant in the NX 300h with a combustion engine 2.5 of 176 hp combined with the 140 hp electric motor. These engines will be coupled to either a standard front-wheel drive configuration or an all-wheel drive system.
